VISIT to Canterbury Cathedral, Kent
Friday 23 June 2017

We will have a guided tour of Canterbury Cathedral, one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England.  It is listed as a World Heritage site and is the Cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury.  Its history dates back to 597AD when St Augustine was sent as a missionary to establish his seat (or 'Cathedra') in Canterbury.  One of the most pivotal events in the Cathedral's history was the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170.  The Cathedral has since been the attraction for thousands of Pilgrims as told in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.  Architecturally the Cathedral is very impressive due to its size and ornate detail. There is also a large display of stained glass windows, some of which have survived from the late 12th and 13th centuries.

The afternoon will be free to visit historic Canterbury and a leaflet with suggestions will be handed out on the day.
